If you are going to be buying a used car, then you want to know how to protect yourself. You can buy a great used car that will go a long time without needing repairs, but you can also end up with a car that starts to have issues right after you buy it. There are things you can do to make sure you are buying a car that goes many miles before needing repair care. The best thing to do is take a car to an automotive repair shop to have it inspected before you agree to the purchase. Below is more on taking a car to be looked at before purchasing it.

There are some reasons some prefer to go to dealership repair shops

While you can take a car to any repair shop, there are benefits to taking it to a dealership's repair shop to be looked at. Some of these benefits include:

  • Dealership mechanics know about the most common trouble areas in cars they specialize in
  • Dealership mechanics have all the latest technology they can use to give the car an extensive inspection
  • Dealership mechanics are held up to very high standards
  • Dealership repair shops tend to be very clean and organized

There are some reasons why some prefer to go to an independent repair shop

There are some people who would rather take a car into an independently owned and operated repair shop to have it inspected before buying it, and some of these reasons include:

  • They already go to a particular repair shop and want to bring the car there
  • Sometimes independent repair shops can get to the car quickly
  • Some independent repair shops will allow you to haggle on the price

There are different ways of handling a pre-purchase inspection

The prepurchase car inspection can be handled in different ways. It is usually the buyer who takes on any financial costs of having the car inspected. You and the seller may agree that you are going to take the car in to be inspected before you purchase it. Or, another way that you can handle it is to purchase the car from them, but have it written in the contract that you have so many days to have the car inspected. If any problems are found, then they will cover the costs of those repairs, or you have the option of getting your money back and turning the car back over to them if problems are found.
